This is a concept page used to explain the Cooperative E-Market.

what?

Cooperative E Market is an online marketplace like e-Bay and Amazon that makes it easy for people with social justice and environmental conscience to buy conscientiously and have a positive impact on the world. Because this platform is a place where sellers have to be, either environmentally friendly and sustainable or cooperative, horizontal collective, a small family-owned and run business, or self-employed people.

Furthermore, the platform works as a cooperative. Every seller gets to be part owner of the platform, they make decisions about how to run the marketplace and get a share of the revenue generated by it.

This is a place where people can buy knowing that they are helping to propel sustainable companies and products and cooperatives that work in a democratic and just environment.

The Economic Power Problem

Right now 10% of the world’s population controls 80% of the world’s resources. (Credit Suisse Bank World Wealth Report 2019)

From 2009 to 2012 the richest 1% Americans captured 95% of all income gains in the country. (Business Insider, Aug 3, 2020)

From 2009 to 2020 the wealth of the billionaire class in the United States increased by 80%. (Business Insider, Aug 3, 2020)

From March to August 2020, during the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, 40 million Americans filed for unemployment while the American billionaires increased their wealth by $637 billion. (Business Insider, Aug 3, 2020)

This is because our financial and economic system is designed to, almost always, generate some profit for the 1%. Every single thing you buy on Amazon, Walmart, or the convenience store generates profit for the 1%. Every time you pay any kind of interest on loans or credit cards, they mostly go to the 1%. There is no free market if the 1% or the 10% control most of the things being produced, distributed, and sold. They have the money needed to start any business, they control the natural resources needed for any type of production, and they control the markets where the products are sold.

For example:
When you go to a store you might have 50 different types of chips you can choose from, but must of them are brands owned by two or three corporations. Almost all the products you have available right now are produced by the same corporations. You might have the illusion of freedom when you choose among their products, but they decide what options will be available for you, and every time you pay for something a portion of your money goes to the 1%.

This is not just some issue of some people having more than others. If everyone had enough, and everyone had freedom and self-determination, it wouldn’t necessarily be a bad thing if some people had more extra cash than others. If a couple of people could buy more shoes, clothes, or cars, or if they could go to more luxurious restaurants or destinations on their vacations. However the fact is, that many people are struggling with poverty or near poverty conditions, while a few others control 80% of the world's resources. And the problem is not just that some don’t have enough and others have in excess, but that the amount of economic inequality that exists transforms itself to power inequality. By controlling 80% of the world’s resources these people control the production of almost everything in the planet; they control or influence how the natural resources are extracted from the planet, the job opportunities for most of the people, and the conditions they are going to be working on; they control most of the market places, they own most of the brands you can choose to buy from; they control the media and the advertisements you are exposed to; they influence politics and laws by lobbying, by promising investment or threatening with capital flight, by controlling the narrative in the mass media, by having access to politicians, and through corruption. These people, even if they don’t know it, make decisions that affect all our lives, and the lives of every living creature on the planet.

why 2

The Ecological Problem

The way we extract resources from the earth, the processes we use to transform them into products, and the waste these products turn into after their use are destroying the planet’s ecosystems and climate patterns. This disruption of the climate patterns will further destroy the planet’s ecosystems threatening life for humans and other species of animals and living things alike.

The ecological problem is related to the economical problem. Because it is cheaper for companies to exploit the environment, produce waste and pollution, to sell products that will have a short useful life, and long life as waste or pollutants. More often than not, the media and most people blame everyday consumers for their decisions on what to buy, stating that the consumer has the power to decide to buy all green, and therefore to force corporations to transform their products to sustainable ones. This is a blunt lie. The consumers can only choose from the options the corporations that control the resources, the production, and the market places ofter them. 10% of the world’s population control 80% of the world's resources, they control or influence the modes of natural resources extraction from the planet, the processes that transform natural resources into products and generate waste and pollution, and they control or influence what is available on the market for people to buy from.

Most people around the world have to work for 8 to 12 hours a day and they have to spend from 1 to 3 hours commuting from home to work, I don’t think we should blame them if they buy their groceries and everything else in the easiest and most cost-effective way possible. Through technology, advertisement, and controls of the market places, corporations have made it easy and cost-effective for people to buy their products. These products are usually produced in a non environmentally sustainable way and they turn into environmentally threatening waste.

The 10% control of the resources gives them control of production and the markets, and the power to influence political regulation on the environmental impact of their products.

The Objective

objectie

We aim to develop a platform that will make it very easy for people to buy from cooperatives, horizontal collectives, small family-owned and run business, self-employed people, and environmentally sustainable companies.

The objective is to use technology to unite environmentally sustainable producers and sellers with environmentally conscious buyers; to unite cooperatives, small family-owned and run business, and self-employed producers and sellers with social and economical justice conscientious buyers.

There are many individual and isolated efforts to produce and sell in an environmentally sustainable way and in a socially and economically justice conscientious way, we aim to give them a place where they can reach millions of isolated conscientious buyers around the world, and to make it easy for people to turn into conscientious buyers.

We want to develop a market place that is owned, controlled, and benefits the people that sell and work on it, not the richest 1%.

Through this effort, we aim to help in the development of a green and equitable economy and the distribution of wealth and power among more people.

The Solution

Cooperative E Market is an online-based market place that makes it easy for people with social justice and environmental conscience to buy conscientiously and having a positive impact in the world.

The platform is a market place like Amazon or eBay, with 2 main differences:

  1. To be able to sell you have to be

    • A Cooperative

    • A Horizontal Collective

    • Self-employed

    • Small family-owned and run business

    • Non-Profit distributors or publishers

    • Sell eco-friendly products.

    • Produce with environmentally sustainable methods.

  2.  Every seller is a Co-Owner of the marketplace:

    1. Every seller will be able to participate in the decision-making process to decide:

      • The percentage of each sale that goes to the platform.

      • Participatory budgeting: The sellers themselves decide where to invest the platform's revenue. Example: development, expansion, maintenance, bug fixing, improvements to the platform, marketing and PR.

      • Every member of the platform can suggest changes and improvements to the platform.

      • Every member of the platform can suggest changes and improvements to the part of the platform they sell in.

      • Every member of the platform can suggest projects to promote the platform.

      • Every member of the platform can participate in the vetting process of sellers / co-owners.

      • Every member of the platform will participate in deciding what part of the revenue of the platform is saved for emergencies, either an emergency of the whole platform or an emergency of a specific sector or region of the platform.

    2. The platform works with 100% transparency, this means that every seller has access to all the financial information of the platform.

    3. Every seller will be able to get a share of the revenue of the marketplace.

      • After all the expenses to maintain the platform have been covered and the percentages invested in marketing and platform maintenance and improvement have been separated, the remaining revenue from the platform will be distributed among all cooperatives.
